Classic design meets modern vibrance in an Edgartown summer estate. 

In Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard—a town rich in maritime heritage—architect Patrick Ahearn designed a new family estate that feels as though it’s stood since the 1860s. Using his concept of “implied history,” Ahearn replaced a 1950s ranch with a traditionally styled home, guest house, pool, and tucked-away carriage house. Classic features such as weathered shingles, Greek Revival details, and proportionally scaled chimneys reinforce its historical narrative.

The interiors, by Allison Mattison of Trellis Home, blend traditional New England charm with vibrant, personalized touches. A refined palette of reds and blues, nautical accents, and playful rooms reflect the family’s style and the spirit of the island. Rich materials like lacquer and linen contrast beautifully with classic millwork and reclaimed wood, adding depth and character. Indoor-outdoor living was essential, with French doors, a covered porch, and a garden path guiding visitors through the layered estate. The result is a timeless retreat that artfully marries Edgartown’s history with modern family life.
