An Ode to Simplicity
A beloved family camp on Martha’s Vineyard has been thoughtfully reimagined into a timeless retreat that honors more than six decades of cherished memories while embracing the future. Hutker Architects, Vineyard Construction Services, and Horiuchi & Solien collaborated to transform the modest 1973 cabin into a contemporary home that remains deeply rooted in its woodland setting and family history. Carefully nestled into the sloping landscape, the expanded residence preserves the intimate character of the original camp through restrained architecture, reclaimed materials, and meaningful details that celebrate generations of traditions. Native plantings, a green roof, and natural stone seamlessly weave the home into its surroundings, while modern systems allow for comfortable year-round living. From preserved family artifacts to handcrafted local elements, every aspect of the project reinforces a profound sense of place and continuity. Rather than replacing the past, the design carries its spirit forward, creating a home where new memories can flourish while honoring the legacy of those that came before.
