A Practice of Preservation
Tucked within Chatham’s historic Old Village, the Cyrus Gould House embodies the lasting charm of a classic Cape Cod cottage. Originally built in 1834, the cottage has served generations of one family as a cherished summer retreat, valued as much for its character and memories as its prime location. When the homeowners enlisted Schneeberger Collective to renovate the property, their goal was not to reinvent the house, but to thoughtfully adapt it for modern life while preserving its historic integrity.
Carefully integrated additions, restored architectural details, and salvaged materials maintain the cottage’s authentic spirit, while subtle improvements enhance year-round comfort and livability. Original materials were salvaged and reused wherever possible, and even the home’s imperfections were intentionally retained. Complemented by interiors from Jillian Burke Design, a discreet Soake Pool, and landscape enhancements that respect the historic setting, the project demonstrates that preservation is not about freezing a home in time, but allowing its story to continue with grace.
