Legacy Revived

After a devastating attic fire destroyed an entire wing of this stately 1917 residence, the homeowners faced an impossible question: how do you rebuild a home without losing its soul? Working alongside Costello Fine Homes and Saltonstall Architects, Surroundings Interior Design used surviving antiques, architectural details, and decades of family history as a blueprint for renewal.
Rather than reimagining the estate with a dramatically different aesthetic, the design team embraced the traditional English-inspired style that had long defined the home. Surviving furnishings, antiques, and architectural details provided a foundation for the rebuild, guiding decisions that balanced restoration with subtle modernization. The most significant transformation occurred within the kitchen wing, where expanded entertaining spaces, improved functionality, and custom details support the homeowners’ passion for hosting while remaining true to the home’s historic charm.
Throughout the home, original craftsmanship was meticulously studied and replicated, ensuring new interventions blended seamlessly with existing elements. What stands is a warm, layered home that celebrates tradition, resilience, and stewardship.
