Restoration Resources to appear on 'This Old House'

Restoration Resources is a renowned nationwide treasure trove of historical and antique elements that include architectural salvage, unique artifacts, vintage furnishings, one-of-a-kind gifts as well as authentic Boston souvenirs. Owner Bill Raymer carefully chooses and "rescues" these gems from notable and historical buildings that are getting demolished throughout New England, restores them, and then displays them in his retail location in Boston's South End.

Restoration Resources

For the third time, Restoration Resources will participate in PBS's Emmy Award-winning This Old House as part of their 35th-anniversary series. On this segment, Restoration Resources will help the show's crew restore an 1850's Greek Revival rowhouse in Boston's historic Charlestown neighborhood by installing a beautiful marble mantel statement piece. The mantel will complement the Bunker Hill home's history, and the addition of artful glass doorknob finishes will contribute to the home's elegant beauty and charm.

The marble mantel has a long history - it was "rescued" from a brownstone in Back Bay and is now given a new life in the sitting room of the Charlestown rowhouse. The mantel’s style fits with the historical period, featuring bulllseye plinth blocks and a classic urn centerpiece, and it's small size allows the delicate details to shine without overwhelming the home's 1,500-square-foot-size.

The mantel's energy-efficient gas fireplaces makes log-stacking and ash-hauling things of the past, and also helps the homeowners increase heating efficiency and cut their energy bill.

Bill Raymer, owner of Restoration Resources, explains that because marble mantels can be taken apart and repositioned, it is really quite simple to refit them around a finished gas insert. That way, the homeowners don’t have to sacrifice their home’s classic, antique feel for this modern and easy-to-use upgrade.

“It was an honor working with This Old House for their thirty-fifth anniversary” says Bill Raymer. “We’ve worked with them twice before and each time is a pleasure. I’d like to give a special thanks to Norm Abram and homeowner Angela for letting us be a part of it all.”

This Old House’s thirty-fifth anniversary episode featuring Restoration Resources will air on Thursday, October 16, 2014 on PBS (be sure to check your listings). In the Boston area, you can watch by tuning into WGBX on Channel 44.
