Stunning Staircases that Transform the Home

A staircase is more than a means to an end. Beyond organizing the spatial flow of the home, a well-executed stair serves as an integral part of the home’s design language. From optimizing vantage points and light distribution, to reinforcing style and character, a beautifully designed and crafted staircase can—quite literally—elevate the home to new heights.

Weston Manor: Cummings Architecture + Interior Design

In the heart of a modern farmhouse, a grand staircase commands attention as it anchors the front entryway, immediately drawing the eye upward to the second floor.

Inspired by the timeless layout of turn-of-the-century homes, it features custom handrails, balusters, and newel posts that reflect meticulous craftsmanship and detail.

Ascending the staircase feels like a journey through history, culminating in a cozy library nestled at the top. An interior window was also salvaged, offering natural light into the welcoming space below.

Sculptural Stair: Shope Reno Wharton

This cantilevered staircase stands as a functional sculpture, crafted in glass and dark walnut wood. Supported by a transparent glass balustrade, the stair gives an intriguing illusion of floating steps.

A handcrafted leather-wrapped handrail winds gracefully, adding a touch of softness and sophisticated elegance. Its tactile surface contrasts beautifully with sleek lines of glass and wood, drawing the eye upward towards the double-height entry foyer.

Holding court in a modern home designed to showcase a couple’s remarkable art collection, the stair serves as a work of art all its own.

Harborview: Jan Gleysteen Architects

Harbor views and open vistas define the design of this waterfront home. Inside, a floating curved staircase welcomes visitors into the main entry hall, with the dramatic barrel-vaulted family room visible beyond.

Wood paneling and beadboard ceilings throughout enhance the coastal ambiance of this bespoke home, with stunning views pouring in from top to bottom.
