Pantone's 'IT' Color for 2018: Ultra Violet

Ultra Violet: Pantone 2018 Color of the Year

Jimi Hendrix riffed on it, Prince wore it, U2 named a song for it, and now the Pantone Color Institute has dubbed it the 2018 Color of the Year. That’s right, the global color authority has tapped Ultra Violet: 18-3838 as the hue that both resonates and reflects the masses’ collective sensibility, mood and inspiration.

Dubbed the color of the cosmos, of mindfulness and possibility, this year’s shade has a lot to live up to. It’s dramatic, nonconformist, mysterious, rich—and, most of all alive. Which, we’re guessing, is largely the point in a current climate that’s marked by uncertainty, spiritualism and more than a little courage.

It will be interesting to see how designers within the fashion, home, art and design worlds—i.e. industries that believe in the power and psychology of color—embrace and channel the heady, blue-based purple. (The trio above gives you a taste of what’s to come). We can say with certainty that Ultra Violet treatments are sure to be bold, fluid and a bit enigmatic, which, in our minds, can only be a beautiful thing.
