Seacoast Sophistication
TMS Architects’ stone, cedar and stucco three-story home in Hampton, New Hampshire, captivated a buyer with its fine yet friendly bearing and oceanfront vistas. Naturally, when the new homeowners sought to make the three-story refuge their own, they also turned to the talents of TMS Architects to put their own stamp on the interiors of this special abode.
The clients strove for a casual but refined sensibility for the minimalist interiors that pairs well with the forms of the exterior, which utilizes materials indigenous to the architecture of the New Hampshire Seacoast and colorful red hip roof overhangs. The result is one of easy sophistication, achieved through color, furnishings and finishes. Natural fir wood paneling, pervasive in the kitchen and living room fireplace wall, is key to the overall design; it delivers a cohesive look that is polished and sleek yet warm.
Throughout the home, and particularly in the main gathering spaces on the second floor, TMS Architects preserved the natural light and panoramic ocean views to the east and south of the initial design, and capitalized on them. The living room spills out to a large exterior deck overlooking the beach, while large picture windows in the casual dining area celebrate the coast’s rocky shoals.
Throughout the vacation home, the clients opted for muted greens and wheat tones that enhance the wood details and provide a neutral backdrop for the homeowner’s art and accessories. The natural palette echoes the hues of the windswept sea grasses beyond its doors, rather than tapping into the shades of the sea’s azure waters.
Pale moss paint and furnishings, sand-tinted hardwoods and reedy floral arrangements ground the getaway’s living spaces, creating an earthy feel that is decidedly “of the shore” in this friendly escape by the sea.
