For 30 years, full-service landscape design firm a Blade of Grass has brought thoughtful landscape design, expert installation, and long-term maintenance to a loyal client base. Now, the firm is setting its sights on Cape Cod, expanding their expertise to meet the unique demands of coastal properties.
Many of their projects evolve over years, with repeat clients entrusting them to refine and expand their landscapes season after season. On this harborside property, a Blade of Grass transformed an outdated pool and spa into a dynamic outdoor living space designed for entertaining and relaxation, and have continued to maintain and enhance the design over the past decade.
“Coastal landscapes require a nuanced approach to materials, plant selection, and environmental considerations,” says Colin Hand, Senior Designer at a Blade of Grass, who designed and oversaw the installation of this seaside outdoor retreat. “On the coast, really the biggest factors we’re dealing with are wind and salt.”
The original aggregate concrete pool deck was replaced with multi-colored bluestone featuring a natural stone finish, and strategic placement of native plantings were installed to enhance privacy, wind resistance, and visual cohesion. Additionally, a new firepit was added and the outdoor kitchen area was expanded, all with a stunning backdrop of harbor views.
Navigating conservation guidelines was key to ensuring that the work was done within the 100-foot buffer from the water’s edge. “We had to be pretty judicious with how much new pool decking we were putting in,” explains Hand.
While many coastal homes are seasonal, regular upkeep is essential to preserving the landscape. With a Blade of Grass’s all-encompassing approach, long-term land care and hardscape design on the coast is a natural fit.
