The New England Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architectural & Art just released the winners of its Eighth Bulfinch Awards. The Bulfinch Awards recognize the achievements of professionals who are committed to excellence in the classical and allied arts within New England. This year, there were over 50 submissions for regional projects considered, with firms around the U.S. represented.
And the winners are…
LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects, Inc. – “John L. Gardner Estate” – Landscape Architecture
LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects reworked the rolling acreage of a historic Brookline estate to preserve the mature trees and hillside yet integrate a new entry court, play lawn and intimate terraces beside the home.

Dell Mitchell Architects – “Brick House” – Residential Restoration, Renovation or Addition
Dell Mitchell Architects' comprehensive exterior renovation and complete interior reconstruction to a 1920s brick residence married the classical tradition with modern-day expectations.

Carpenter & MacNeille – “Oakledge” – Residential New Construction over 5,000 square feet
Carpenter & MacNeille’s new construction was designed to appear as if a coastal Stick-style home had evolved into an 1890s shingle style “cottage” reminiscent of the seaside homes of the Gilded Age.

Campbell/Smith Architects – “Norton St. Home” – Residential New Construction under 5,000 square feet
This summer home and weekend retreat by Campbell/Smith Architects was designed to fit the scale and character of historic Edgartown, though not in the district proper.

Yale University’s Benjamin Franklin College and Pauli Murray College carry forward the tradition of Gothic style architecture established in the 1920s and 1930s Harkness Memorial quadrangle and original residential colleges.
Carpenter & MacNeille Woodworking – “Nantucket Bunk Room” – Craftsmanship/Artisanship
Carpenter & MacNeille Woodworking’s Nantucket Bunk Room was designed to maximize limited guest room space and pay tribute to the rich maritime history of Nantucket.

G. P. Schafer Architect – “Alterations for House by the Sea” – Interior Design
G. P. Schafer Architect adapted a 3,000-square-foot timber frame seaside home to embrace both the structure’s modernity and agrarian barn architecture and reveal a contemporary point of view.
