Coastal Haven, a Designer Show House in Newburyport, MA: July 1 - July 29, 2016

The Museum of Old Newbury is proud to announce planning for its first Designer Show House to be open for tours in July 2016. Coastal Haven, formerly known as the "Old Walsh Farm", was a working farm for many years located in the heart of Newburyport’s riverside Joppa neighborhood.

Designer Show Houses are breathtaking homes in which every living space has been given a makeover by an interior design or landscape professional. Through the generous support of a local family, the Museum’s show house will be held in a gracious period home with contemporary additions. Each designer will compete for the opportunity to work their visual magic on one specific area of the property to transform this waterfront estate into a richly textured home to delight the eyes and stir the imagination. All proposals will be reviewed by a juried committee.

Coastal Haven is a classic colonial style built c.1810. White clapboards, twin chimneys, and wide board pine floors add to the wonderful character of the interior which consists of 3,300 square feet. The rooms are bright and airy while still having an intimate feel and have been sensitively and stunningly upgraded throughout. A charming colonial barn to the rear of the house and a half-acre of land with superb views of the Merrimac River and Plum Island beyond make this a quintessential New England property.

This period home is a preservation story. At one time slated for demolition, the present owners decided instead to create a bold addition providing a pleasing blend of old and new and breathing fresh life into the historic home. The architect for the project is Andrew Sidford of Newburyport who has won numerous awards for his sensitive and stunning additions to period homes and has been featured multiple times in the pages of Design New England magazine.

The show house will kick off with a gala on July 1and be open to the public through July 29. This major fundraiser for the Museum of Old Newbury is being chaired by board member Jean Moak of Salisbury. “Proceeds from the event will help to preserve and maintain the Museum’s campus and world-class historical collections and will promote its mission which includes growth and sustainability in an ever changing Newburyport”, says Moak.

The Museum of Old Newbury preserves and interprets the history of “Old Newbury” including Newbury, Newburyport, and West Newbury from pre-settlement to the present. Founded in 1877, the Museum carries out its mission through the preservation and administration of the Cushing House, the Perkins Engraving Plant, and other historic structures on its High Street campus and furthers its purpose through lectures, exhibitions, educational programs, publications, and research.
