“Captain’s Quarters”: A Weston Home Theater

An unused space in our client's Weston basement provides big time fun when transformed into a fabulous home theater/media room. The family uses this space for movies and gaming together and individually.
The initial spark for the design came when the client saw a column detail in our showroom. From there the "Captain's Quarters" home theater began to take shape. The room is so popular that the homeowners refer to the space as the lower level.
The client wanted the room to be easy to operate, maximizing full enjoyment. To set the mood for every type of activity, the theater was outfitted with a Control4 remote so they wouldn't have to bring their smart phones into the room or worry about whether they were charged. This dedicated remote operates everything: lighting, DVD player, streaming media, the projector and the game console.
The room was set-up with five "scenes" based on source selection that included easy one-button operation from both the handheld remote and a wall-mounted keypad located at the theater entrance. Simply selecting "Movie" as you enter lights a path to high quality reclining seats, activates the audio-video system, selects play, and after a short delay, fades out the lights to a pre-determined "movie-viewing" lighting level and the movie begins. Touch any setting such as TV, Internet, DVD, or Game on the remote/keypad and the room springs to life automatically activating all of the pre-set programming. The equipment can also be used without the mood settings as well, and any smart phone or tablet can also operate the room.

The client wanted the sophisticated ambiance of a movie theater rather than a family room environment. The interior design of the room was by Audio Video Design, based on meetings with the client, poring over magazine and website images.
The owners had amassed hundreds of DVD movies over the years. A location adjacent to the "lobby" of the home theater is used to house the collection in a custom-built, wall-mounted storage system. It was built using the same cherry wood as the theater detail. The end result satisfied the homeowners' needs and aded to the experience of the theater entrance that also includes film reels, movie posters and a beautiful brass and burgundy rope line that pulls it all together.

The client is thrilled with the result, providing a wonderful entertainment environment. It is fun for everyone to gather to watch sports, movies or play the latest video game. The client said "The new room has changed the way we think about entertainment at home and has taken on an importance in our everyday activities that would have been hard to predict at the outset of the project."
