With a background at renowned firm Gregory Lombardi Design and a brief foray into commercial urban projects, Pilis quickly realized his passion for crafting intimate, personalized outdoor spaces tailored to homeowners’ lifestyles. “I love the high-touch detailing that goes into residential work, seeing those thoughtful details carried through, and watching clients get genuinely excited about the spaces we create together,” Pilis shares.
With a strong lineup of projects in development, Pilis is looking forward to what’s to come in his second year of practice. “I have a lot slated for construction this year, and I’m eager to see these projects take shape,” he says. “It’s an inspiring time.”
Weston Estate
One of his most ambitious ongoing projects is a historic English revival home in Weston, Massachusetts. The property was acquired mid-renovation, offering a blank slate for the design team, which also includes Pauli & Uribe Architects, GC Builders, and Shelter Interior Design.

“The house was stripped to the studs, and the lot was just dirt—completely open-ended,” he says. “It gave us the opportunity to start fresh and really work with the clients to define the outdoor program from the ground up.”

The landscape scope is extensive, encompassing a grand arrival and front entry, a full recreation area featuring a sport court and play lawn, and an expansive rear entertainment terrace. The program even includes plans for an indoor pool.
Hillside Overlook
Another exceptional project is Hillside Overlook, where the goal is to bridge a new outdoor living space with the existing woodland landscape. “The site is stunning, but half of the parcel is just this steep, wooded slope,” Pilis describes. “The challenge—and the opportunity—is to expand the usable space while respecting the natural setting.”

By introducing warm wood decking and a native woodland plant palette, the design blends into its surroundings rather than imposing upon them. “We’re using materials that not only match the home but also feel organic in the landscape. We want it to feel like an extension of the site rather than something artificially imposed on it.”

South End Garden
Compact in size, this urban oasis requires meticulous planning to maximize the square footage. “The design looks simple, but the logistics are complicated,” Pilis says. “It’s a fun little project in a tight box. But once you open that box, there’s so much more to it.”

With only a narrow 30-inch-wide alley available for material transport, every move must be strategic. Despite these constraints, the project promises to be a beautiful balance of modern design and classic Boston brownstone charm, with detailed carpentry and sleek lighting elements.

A Philosophy of Functional Elegance
While some high-end residential landscapes lean toward extravagance, Pilis prioritizes functional elegance. “It’s about designing in a way that’s practical, intuitive, and enhances the way clients live,” Pilis says.“Understanding how clients want to use their home and outdoor spaces is always the primary focus. Everything else falls into place from there.”
Collaboration
As an independent designer, Pilis thrives on opportunities to work with different professionals to create a sense of community and teamwork on each project. “My favorite thing about what I do is the collaboration," he shares. "Whether it’s with the client or the entire project team, I love the feeling of creating together." With a strong emphasis on collaboration, problem-solving, and a long-term vision for sustainable luxury residential landscape design, MPLD’s work continues to shape remarkable outdoor environments to be enjoyed for years to come.
