The synergy between indoor and outdoor spaces often defines the character and livability of a home. Michael D’Angelo Landscape Architecture (MDLA) and MGD+ recently undertook a transformative project that exemplifies the power of collaboration in executing an all-encompassing vision.
“The house was purchased from a custom home builder and developer, with whom we initially worked on a full renovation project,” says Mariana Dagatti, Principal Manager at MGD+. “We were inspired to create a luxury home with a distinct identity while ensuring the building and site elements were seamlessly integrated into the neighborhood context.”
Delighted by the proposed renovation plans, the new owners hired MGD+ and MDLA to complete the project and bring their dream home and landscape to life. “Though the client was pleased with the project's style when they bought it during construction, we still made several adjustments to meet their specific needs,” Dagatti recalls. Each key living space affords a view of the exterior landscape—a verdant expanse of thoughtfully designed outdoor living spaces.
“One of the initial challenges addressed in the landscape was the driveway configuration,” says Michael D'Angelo, owner of MDLA. Collaborating closely with MGD+, D’Angelo strategically relocated the garage and driveway configuration to liberate space for amenities including a sprawling backyard, outdoor kitchen and dining area, and newly renovated pool and cabana. Bluestone pathways gracefully link each area, and harmonize with the architectural elements of the home. “It was really intentional that the landscape and the architecture all tied together,” D’Angelo notes.
Landscape lighting plays up the atmosphere of D'Angelo's design. From subtle path illumination to dramatic tree up lighting, a mix of formal evergreens, lime hydrangeas, boxwoods and native shrubs and ferns glow elegantly against the white stucco facade of the main house and pool cabana.
“Working with MDLA made it easy to achieve our goal of connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces and vice versa,” Dagatti affirms. “We observed how both disciplines contributed their unique perspectives, expertise, and vision to shape the new home.”
