A Symphony of Elegance

When a couple sought to fill a void in their newly redesigned Back Bay home, they knew exactly where to turn: M. Steinert & Sons, New England’s premier piano merchant and the area’s only authorized dealer for Steinway & Sons pianos, the world’s preeminent piano manufacturer. The couple chose an ebony polish Steinway Spirio for the Back Bay residence and were so inspired by the Spirio technology, they decided on something unique for their home on Cape Cod.  Marking their fourth piano purchase from M. Steinert & Sons, their latest model—a custom light blue Steinway Spirio with a diamond gloss finish—blends quality design and renowned Steinway craftsmanship with modern innovation.

“The Spirio is a high-definition player piano that activates the home’s design more than just visually. The music really fills the room, and creates a truly special experience,” explains Brendan Murphy, President of M. Steinert & Sons. The Spirio’s integrated player system transforms the piano into a centerpiece that offers an immersive musical experience.

Unlike traditional player pianos, the Spirio’s player system is integrated during construction, ensuring unparalleled performance quality.  Accompanied by an iPad for intuitive control via Bluetooth, the system provides access to the Spirio library with the touch of a button, where a vast catalog of both modern and historic live recordings are readily available. “The music played on Spirio is not a representation of the original piece of music. It is the piece of music,” Murphy emphasizes. The library includes live-recorded performances by renowned artists, providing a truly authentic listening experience.

The Spirio’s integrated video capabilities allow homeowners to sync performances with their home entertainment system, creating a multisensory experience. “It is perfectly synced where you see the pianists playing, but it is really your piano that is playing,” Murphy explains. These features make the Spirio a dynamic addition to any home, engaging both musicians and non-musicians alike. “So many pianos in the world are sitting in people’s homes, unused, unplayed…this product is a way to break through the fourth dimension.”

M. Steinert & Sons’ bespoke services offer a range of customization options, from vibrant colors to exotic veneers like Macassar Ebony and Kewazinga Bubinga. Clients can even hand-select the specific wood flitch used for their piano, ensuring a truly personalized masterpiece. Providing a collaborative design experience, the company works closely with clients and their designers to ensure the piano integrates seamlessly into the home’s design.

“Our in-house designer works with our client’s designers to help figure out the best placement, design, and color,” says Murphy. CAD drawings of all Steinway models allow clients to visualize piano placement during both pre- and post-construction phases.

Attention to detail and a customer-focused approach reflect the company’s longstanding commitment to excellence. Founded in 1869, M. Steinert & Sons, a family owned and operated business, is the oldest Steinway dealer in the world, serving generations of families in New England who see their piano as more than an instrument, but an enduring source of joy, elegance, and artistry.
