Summer Homes & Style:

The Maine Event

Rob Bramhall Architects’ charming cottage on the coast of Maine is proof positive that kids shouldn’t have all the fun. Awash with sunlight and a summer breeze sensibility, the multilevel vacation home is the grown-up answer to that childhood tree house, and it’s perfect. Perched atop a steep slope, surrounded by trees and wildflowers, this cheerful property elicits a bird’s-eye view of the sparkling waters of Moxie Cove.

The leafy grounds and coastal panoramas are invited in as decor thanks to oversized, double-hung windows that run the length of the ocean-facing facade, while an open plan and sky-high beamed ceilings further contribute to the cottage’s airy spirit. The design elements converge in a third-floor sleeping loft, arguably the home’s most coveted sleeping quarters, which looks over the living space below and out to the cove via dormer windows.

The interior is kept simple; its shell, clad in a mellow yellow bead board and v-groove paneling, gains interest by mixing the horizontal and vertical lines of the paneling. Meanwhile, Maine mementos, a bright collection of contemporary art, and honest, stripped-down furnishings further contribute to a “less-is-more” attitude. After all, this is a refuge for recharging and recreation; it’s about fun, not frills.
