Trending: Shades of Blue
Recently, we’ve been seeing tons of blue—in all its forms—in every room in the house. From deep, rich indigo, to light and playful periwinkle, to clean and airy aqua, blue is truly having a moment this spring.
The living room is a great place to incorporate a bold blue. In this space by Surroundings Interior Design, a teal wall adds an element of playfulness, and brings depth to the room. When paired with contrasting patterns, the result is a carefully curated space that appears effortless.

For even more teal, try incorporating the color into the walls, window treatments, and even the floor. By using different patterns, and combining the loud hue with soft neutrals, the space is colorful and fun without feeling overwhelming.

SLC Interiors takes a different approach with their Woods Hole renovation—a deep, dark, indigo blue is the dominating shade here. This darker hue doesn’t mean the space is all business and no fun – quite the opposite. The space uses different patterns, prints, and textures that all stem from a common, nautically-inspired theme. The slight variations on the dark indigo keep it consistent but not monotone.

Mixing soft patterns of blue can make for a serene style in the bedroom. Interior designer Mollie Johnson showcases this space as one of her favorite understated bedroom palettes. Johnson explains, “It’s important to have a relaxing and calming sleeping environment and is a departure from the colors of daily living.”

A similar approach is taken in this study space, where different textures like the grasscloth walls and velvet upholstered chair are brought together by a soft periwinkle blue.

For a more sparing use of the dark, bold hue, check out this kitchen. A neutral, mostly-white palette is complemented beautifully by blue upholstered chairs, a blue window cushion, and a blue backsplash. The uniformity of the shade throughout the space creates a consistent look.

Don’t be afraid to use blue on larger elements of the kitchen. In this space by Elizabeth Swartz, a lighter blue covers the cabinets and drawers. Other blue accents throughout the room maintain the color scheme. Colored cabinetry is a great look for a vacation home or beach home in the tropics.

Blue is also a beautiful color for a stone backsplash, as seen in the space below. A stunning, semi-precious blue agate backsplash packs a big punch, and makes a big statement in a white and light hardwood kitchen space.

A sunroom filled with various blue elements makes for a clean and fresh springtime space. The blue cushions and table feel summery and fresh, but can also be adapted for other times of the year by simply adding seasonally-appropriate accents.

Finally, a subtle, barely-there blue can be just as fashion-forward. Just check out this Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams space—a light indigo wall color is complemented expertly with greys and metallics, and the result is truly heavenly.
