“We got into Boston Design Guide because our clients told us they wanted to see us there. We stayed because everyone says they see us there. It’s great exposure in a discriminating marketplace, and we are honored to be included.”

“Since it’s inception the Boston Design Guide has certainly generated more customers for us. The best thing for us is that those customers have been looking for a high quality product – quality over price. The magazine has just provided good qualified leads for us.”

Company profile

Karen Sebastian, LLC combines extensive knowledge in landscape architecture, horticulture and project implementation to create intelligent and unusual project designs that are beautiful, sustainable and tailored the the individual clients' needs and lifestyles.

"Our process is simple," explains Karen Sebastian. "We help our clients identify and formalize their goals and desires. Then we look for opportunities to get more from their spaces while meeting these goals. We translate those ideas and conversations into specific design options. Then we deliver creative solutions."

Sebastian earned her Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was also the recipient of a National Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Sebastian believes that it takes teamwork to turn a good project into a great one. Her work ethic is based on building strong relationships with everyone involved in the project and taking all of their ideas into consideration.

Sebastian has a deep knowledge of plants and specializes in planting design. In addition to her design firm, she teaches classes in plant identification, residential design and planting design at the New England Wildflower Society and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. She also occasionally serves as a professor of landscape architecture in the department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at UMass, Amherst.

Sebastian is careful to identify value in what already exists in a site – she looks for inspiration and opportunity in existing features like trees, topography and exposed stone that might make the site special then starts to design from there. Preserving and complementing existing elements lends focus and unique qualities to each design. Sebastian also takes an ecologically sensitive approach when designing and choosing the plants that will make up the project, using plants that suit the conditions of the land, avoiding invasive exotics and choosing plants that will thrive in the given environment.
